INHABITANTS of the central Slovak town of Slovenská Ľupča and several nearby villages experienced a mild earthquake on January 10. The quake caused cracks in the plaster coating of the walls of some older houses in Slovenská Ľupča, but no greater damages were reported.
The Slovak daily Hospodárske noviny wrote on January 12 that the mild earthquake was also felt by the inhabitants of Ľubietová, Medzibrod, Podkonice, and in some parts of Banská Bystrica.
The last seismic activity in Ľubietová was recorded about a decade ago and a large earthquake hit the area during the Middle Ages.
Peter Labák, head of the seismology department at the Institute of Geophysics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences said that the earthquake's local magnitude, as measured by the national network of seismic stations, was 2.2.
