The number of people employed in Slovak industry in November 2009 was 16.8 percent lower than the same month a year earlier. According to data released by the Statistics Office of the Slovak Republic, the number of employees also fell year-on-year in the wholesale sector (by 27.3 percent), pubs and restaurants (21.8 percent), distribution and repair of motor vehicles (10.1 percent), selected market services (5.9 percent), accommodation (5.8 percent), retail (3.9 percent), construction (2 percent) and in transport and storage (1 percent). Year-on-year growth in employment was reported in the information and telecommunications technology sector, which was up by 1.2 percent, the SITA newswire wrote.
Industry remained the biggest employer in the January-November 2009 period, with 500,300 people employed. By November last year, employment had grown on an annual basis in the information and communications technology sector (5.3 percent), construction (2.5 percent) and transportation and storage (1 percent). On the other hand, pubs and restaurants recorded a decline in employment by 20.6 percent, the wholesale sector by 19.9 percent, industry by 15 percent, distribution and repair of motor vehicles by 9.9 percent, the accommodation sector by 6.8 percent, selected market services by 6.3 percent and the retail sector by 3 percent.
