Members of the European Parliament’s committee for economy and monetary policy are scheduled to vote on a proposal that Slovakia adopt the single European currency on January 1, 2009, on June 3.
Slovak MEP Vladimír Maňka (SMER-SD) said the committee had until May 26 to submit proposals to the report, the SITA newswire wrote. They submitted 22 amending proposals to the proposal to adopt the euro in Slovakia. Most proposals, however, pertained to technical details.
Some deputies demand that that the European Commission and the Council in cooperation with the Slovak government create a "road map consisting of steps necessary to preserve favourable economic parameters in Slovakia. Maňka, however, will propose to omit some of the proposals that the Slovak government is already addressing. According to him, such a road map creates an impression that the Slovak Republic does not fulfil the criteria or that it fulfils them, but only on the condition of further measures. Moreover, such a road map is not supported in the Agreement Establishing the European Community. This document has enough own defined tools how to solve any issue.
Moreover, some proposals interfere in the tax policy of the Slovak Republic. Slovakia is catching up with the old EU countries, Maňka explained, emphasising that tax policy is in the hands of individual member countries and EU institutions cannot interfere in it. SITA
