THE INTERIOR Ministry is warning that when Slovakia enters the EU, there will be a risk that radical extremists would start establishing branches in this European state.

Slovakia is scheduled to enter the EU in May 2004 and the ministry's warning comes in its proposed plan of domestic security that will soon be discussed by the Slovak cabinet.

According to the state-run TASR news agency, the ministry's plan also said that so far there were no terrorist groups active in Slovakia and that therefore extremism is, at the moment, no direct threat to the country's constitutional establishment. The ministry says that more serious threats present in Slovakia were clientelism, corruption, poor law enforcement, and organised crime.
