At its session in Strasbourg on June 17, the European Parliament (EP) is to debate the report on Slovakia's Eurozone accession bid.
Members of the European Parliament's Committee of Economic and Monetary Affairs already backed the enlargement of the Eurozone by approving the report by a considerable majority on June 3. The report, drawn up by MEP from Malta David Casa, as appointee for Slovakia's euro changeover, which states that Slovakia is ready for Eurozone entry as of January 1, 2009, was approved by 33 members of the committee. Four were opposed and eight were absent.
Similar results are expected from the vote at the European Parliament session.
"I expect the European Parliament to support the adoption of the euro in Slovakia. The Financial Committee, whose word has a great influence, has already recommended the accession," said Slovakia's MEP Vladimír Maňka for the SITA newswire on June 15.
But some MEPs, mainly from Germany, have voiced their belief that Slovakia should postpone its Eurozone entry, doubting its readiness. According to Maňka, it is therefore possible that some proposals for changes, in which MEPs suggest postponing the adoption of the euro in Slovakia will arise during the parliamentary session, but these should not be approved.
