THE EXCISE tax on spirits in Slovakia increased 13.2 percent as of January 2006.

In concrete terms, the excise tax on a 0.7-litre bottle of spirits with 40-percent alcohol jumped from last year's Sk70 to Sk79 on January 1, the SITA news agency wrote.

MP Jozef Mikuš of the ruling coalition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union proposed the excise tax revision, arguing that Slovakia had the lowest excise tax on spirits among neighboring states.

Provided the consumption of alcohol in Slovakia remains at current levels, the tax rise should bring in an extra Sk580 million to the state budget this year.
