Fico considering decreasing money for euro-campaign

Robert Fico said on March 11 that he has been pondering, “What's the point of paying for the euro-introduction campaign in a media that constantly bashes it?”

"It's ridiculous and unacceptable for someone to literally make fun of the Government and after five minutes broadcast a campaign in favour of the euro,” Fico continued, stopping short of identifying exactly to which media he was referring.

The total volume of money shouldn't change, but the allocation of money among the individual media could change, the TASR newswire wrote. The PM stressed that the readership of dailies and weeklies is constantly decreasing in Slovakia and that he was not interested in them at all.

"I don't see any reason in sticking state money into private media that slam the Government and permanently go against its strategic goal - the euro," he said.

Slovakia plans to adopt the euro on January 1, 2009. Fico admitted that the euro has some downsides, stressing however that the positives outweigh them.

"Good luck to all of you, and may your readership be down," the PM said as a farewell to the journalists. TASR
