OPPOSITION Smer party chairman Robert Fico has said that if his party wins elections and plays a role in the next government, it may make political compromises, "but not fundamental ones".
According to the Pravda daily, Fico said he expected to have to make concessions during any negotiations on forming a new government.
Slovakia has had a succession of coalition governments since independence in 1993, never with fewer than three members.
"It cannot be expected, however, that Smer will form a government with a horde of right wing parties just to get some cars and posts," Fico said, adding if that were the only option, his party would prefer to remain in opposition.
In the latest voter opinion poll, Smer led the rankings with 35 percent, about 10 percentage points higher than the three right-wing parties of the current administration.
Slovakia holds general elections on June 17.
