Outgoing Prime Minister Robert Fico provided his standpoint on the meeting held on June 30 between President Ivan Gašparovič and Iveta Radičová, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) election leader, regarding Slovakia’s position on the EU’s Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), the SITA newswire reported.
Fico, who was invited but did not attend the meeting, accused PM-designate Radičová of providing misleading information about Slovakia's stance on stabilisation package, the SITA newswire wrote.
“Before and after the parliamentary elections she said an unambiguous “no” to the stabilisation mechanism. Now she is making excuses that she has inherited something and that the process is irreversible. This is a typical example of a fraud against [her] own voters because she tried to make herself good in their eyes before the elections and now she informs them that everything is different and that promises made ahead of the elections are no longer valid,” reads Fico's statement issued on the evening of June 30, a few hours after the meeting was held.
Fico said that Radičová will either act as a real prime minister and make a decision conforming to her publicly-made, pre-election commitments or just be a spokesperson for the future governing coalition. He reconfirmed that Smer publicly supports the stabilisation facility forged for the eurozone but said that it lacks a majority in the Slovak parliament to push it through.
