Monika Flašíková-Beňová who was elected as a member of the European Parliament earlier in June representing Slovakia’s Smer party has been elected a deputy chairwoman of the Party of European Socialists (PES), the SITA newswire wrote.
PES chose its nine deputy chairpersons on June 24 and Flašíková-Beňová thinks that the election of a Slovak representative to the post is a big success for her Smer party, as it is one of the top EP positions. She was elected chairwoman for civic freedoms, minorities and constitutional affairs.
The elected deputy chairpersons are to prepare a draft agenda for this year by September. The Party of European Socialists and the European People's Party (EPP) are the two strongest blocs within the European Parliament.
