MELTING snow and heavy rainfall swelled rivers across Slovakia, such as at Devín Castle (above). The floods have already taken two lives, a 61-year-old man in Modra, and a 4-year-old boy in eastern Slovakia's Miľpoš, Sabinov district. In Central Slovakia one woman who was seen feeding wild birds is missing. So far 123 villages and 559 houses have been flooded countrywide. In Myjava 12 houses were evacuated. On March 30, authorities said the situation had stabilized. Defense Minister Martin Fedor said the army is ready to help the public.
