The government approved a proposal from the Interior Ministry to set up a special security unit to protect selected Slovak embassies on June 13.
The idea of creating such a unit came in response to a suicide bomb attack on the Slovak embassy in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad in June 2005 and the increased threat of global terrorism.
The ten-member unit’ priorities will be the Slovak embassy in Baghdad and the liaison authority in Priština, the capital of Kosovo. The Interior Ministry said that the embassies in the Iranian capital Teheran and the Israeli city of Tel Aviv should also be classified as being under potential threat.
The selected police officers will have to undergo special training before being considered ready to join the unit on July 1, 2008.
The unit, which will be capable of going into action within the shortest time possible, will be dispatched at the request of the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
