As of the next parliamentary term, Slovakia should have only 12 instead its current 14 ministries, in line with a plan that was submitted by Prime Minister Robert Fico on Friday, January 15, and passed by the government on Tuesday, January 19.
The plan proposes terminating the Construction and Regional Development Ministry and the Environment Ministry, and transferring their portfolios to a newly-created Economy and Construction Ministry, and a new Agriculture, Environment and Regional Development Ministry.
The supervision of European Union funds would pass from the Construction and Regional Development Ministry to the Government Office, the TASR newswire wrote. Also under the new changes, the Education Ministry would become the Education, Science and Research Ministry, while the Culture Ministry, which would take over matters pertaining to tourism, would see its name change to the Culture and Tourism Ministry.
According to Fico, the measures could save the state between €11.62 million and €13.28 million. TASR
