Heat alerts to kick off the long weekend in Slovakia

Meteorologists issued warnings for August 29 and 30.

With Slovakia celebrating the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) on August 29, which is a national holiday, and many people taking a day off the next day, heatwaves will hit Slovakia again on the last, long weekend of this month.

The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) issued two first-level warnings on the heatwave on August 29 and 30, lasting from 13:00 to 17:00 on both days.

Thermometers are expected to show between 33°C and 34°C in many Slovak districts but the ones in northern Slovakia on August 29.

The temperatures will not change much the next day. Nevertheless, only people living in the southernmost districts neighbouring Hungary and most districts in Košice Region will be exposed to extremely high temperatures.
