A draft treaty between Slovakia and the Vatican is currently being studied by the Holy See, reported Slovak Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Jan Figel on November 12. The treaty, which could be signed sometime in 1999, touches on Slovak society and the participation of the Church in issues linked to the public interest.
Previous efforts to arrange a treaty were stymied by the insistence of the cabinet of former Premier Vladimír Mečiar that the government be given advance notification of bishops to be appointed in Slovakia.
