Nové Zámky
An unknown assailant doused Zoltán Szárai, first deputy chairman of the Nové Zámky district for the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) with petrol and then set him on fire September 9 in Nové Zámky. Szárai was rushed to Ružinov Hospital in Bratislava where he was treated for severe burns covering 90% of his body, but he died the next day from his wounds.
According to SMK regional executive Jozef Szaraz, an investigation into the murder has begun although no arrests have yet been made. Szaraz said that he personally doubted the "monstrous murder" was ethnically or politically motivated.
Szárai was 32-years-old and "a non-confrontational character whom people liked," Szaraz said. The SMK had recently decided to grant him a promotion to a high party office, he added.
