AT A SESSION on May 12, the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) Trnava assembly supported a proposal to make incumbent chairman Vladimír Mečiar honorary chairman and party vice-chairman Viliam Veteška executive chairman.
Tibor Mikuš, another HZDS vice-chairman, said HZDS' Trnava branch hopes the change will strengthen the party's leadership and help it broaden its appeal.
Mikuš is one of Veteška's main supporters.
But Mečiar currently maintains the support of 80-90 percent of the party's district assemblies, HZDS spokesperson Zdenka Kramplová said.
Mečiar plans to change the party statutes at the party congress in June to give himself more power as leader. For example, he wants the HZDS chairman, not ordinary party members, to decide who will become the district and regional party heads.
