The ruling coalition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) Trnava assembly supported a proposal to make incumbent chairman Vladimír Mečiar honorary chairman and party vice-chairman Viliam Veteška executive chairman during its session on May 12.
Tibor Mikuš, another HZDS vice-chairman, said HZDS’ Trnava branch hopes the change would strengthen the party's leadership and help it find a better position on the Slovak political scene.
Mikuš is one of Veteška’s main supporters.
Mečiar currently has the support of 80-90 percent of the party’s district assemblies, said HZDS spokesperson Zdenka Kramplová.
Mečiar plans to change the party statutes at the party congress in June to give himself more power as leader. He wants the HZDS chairman, and not ordinary party members, to decide who will become the district and regional party heads.
