Just days ahead of a crucial EU summit this weekend to discuss future measures to shore up the eurozone it is still not clear which – if any – of Slovakia’s top politicians will travel to represent the country in Brussels. After the cabinet commissioned Prime Minister Iveta Radičová (Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ)) to lead the Slovak delegation to the top-level EU meeting, President Ivan Gašparovič said that he would decide on the matter.
Gašparovič did not rule out Radičová representing Slovakia at the summit, but added that the alternative would be that he himself attends. The head of state is to meet coalition leaders today in order to agree whether the Radičová cabinet will lead the country until elections set for March.
Though the coalition and the opposition have not officially cooperated on Slovakia's stance at the summit they agree on most topics, the Sme daily wrote on October 20. They would agree with tougher sanctions for irresponsible countries and want individual countries’ right of veto in basic issues to be left unchanged. They also do not agree with further enlargement of the bailout fund. All parliamentary parties except Smer strongly oppose the proposed unification of tax bases across the EU, Sme reported, citing a survey of the parties that it had conducted.
