A PROPOSED amendment to the law on weapons and munitions means that owners of unregistered guns in Slovakia can get an amnesty.
The illegal guns must be handed in to police within a year of the amendment coming into force. The Committee for Defence and Security proposed the amendment to parliament on March 9, the TASR news agency reported.
If, following a police forensic examination, a gun is found not to have been used in a crime, the owner can apply for legal possession of the gun.
Commission head Robert Kaliňák says the proposal is to bring about a reduction in the number of illegally held guns and identify those that have been used for criminal purposes.
