NAMES change in popularity over time and each year certain names become more fashionable while others start to fade into oblivion. The most popular name for boys born in Slovakia in 2011 was Jakub, given to 1,188 newborns. Meanwhile the most popular name for girls, 1,027 of them, was Sofia, the TASR newswire reported, citing data provided by the Interior Ministry.
Other popular names for boys were Samuel (1,150) and Tomáš (979), followed by Martin, Lukáš, Michal, Adam, Filip, Matúš and Patrik.
Other popular names for girls were Viktória (797) and Natália (736), followed by Nela, Laura, Ema, Nina, Kristína, Michaela and Sára.
The Interior Ministry also noted some unusual names that were chosen in 2011, offering its list of names such as Dorofeja, Ha, Džesika, Eszmeralda, Fanny, Marilyn and Mína for girls and Bentley, Bo, Vital, Botond, Efraim, Fero, Maurícius, and Sidney for boys.
TASR also wrote about the most common surnames, with the top six being Horváth/Horváthová, Kováč/Kováčová, Tóth/ Tóthová, Varga/Vargová, Nagy/Nagyová and Baláž/ Balážová. The SITA newswire then added the next four most common surnames to complete the top ten: Molnár/Molnárová in seventh position, Szabó for men and Balogová for women in eighth, followed by Balog and Lukáčová in ninth position and Lukáč and Nováková in tenth.
