THE RULING Smer and Slovak National Party (SNS) are watching how the opposition right wing parties flirt with their coalition partner, the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) led by Vladimír Mečiar. However, despite signs of greater acceptance of the controversial ex-PM and his HZDS, the opposition still remains split over Mečiar.
Unlike the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) and the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK), Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) leader Pavol Hrušovský has ruled out cooperation with Mečiar.
“This topic is not up-to-date. The ruling coalition is governing and the coalition has no problems. These discussions took place in the KDH before the parliamentary elections and [opinions] are well known. Our attitudes have not changed,” said Hrušovský according to Pravda daily.
As early as one year ago Hrušovský stated that his KDH would not form a coalition with HZDS even if Mečiar were no longer the party’s chairman.
Hrušovský thus rejected the proposal of Ján Čarnogurský, a senior KDH member and head of the KDH before Hrušovský, to reevaluate the negative stance of the KDH towards HZDS and its leader Mečiar.
