THE CHRISTIAN Democratic Movement (KDH), until recently a member of the ruling coalition, has promised to submit a draft bill to parliament to protect the traditional institution of marriage.
The bill defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. It bans marriage between two people of the same sex, and denies to such couples the protection and privileges enjoyed by traditional married couples.
If the bill is passed, Slovak politicians will have to follow this definition of marriage when dealing with international treaties or holding talks abroad, the SITA news wire wrote.
The KDH said it had drawn up the bill in response to a petition calling for the enactment of registered same sex partnerships.
Moreover, the party said it disliked the idea of equal protection for unmarried couples. Currently, the law gives married couples advantages in tax, pension and social security legislation.
KDH boss Pavol Hrušovský said the ruling Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) had pledged to support the draft.
