THE KOREAN carmaker Kia Motors Slovakia plans to produce more than 150,000 cars next year, and to reschedule the start of production to an earlier date.

Trial production of two car models and assembly line tests started in May, meaning that serial production of the ED hatchback version could be launched a month or two earlier thanks to the fact that the plant was completed before the planned deadline.

The company's vice president, Chang-Kyun Han, said at an AutoSlovakia 2006 conference on May 16 that Kia was now concentrating on improving production quality.

The company hopes to achieve full production capacity of 300,000 cars per year in 2009, and might also consider increasing the production volume.

In June 2007 the carmaker should start making the Kia Sportage, launching the ED Wagon version in September and starting with a three-door version of the ED model in December 2006.
