Kiska presents Ashton with high Slovak state award

During her visit to Slovakia, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton was awarded with the Order of the White Double Barred Cross Second Class by President Andrej Kiska on July 1. This was the first state award presented by Kiska since he assumed the office of president in mid-June.

Ashton who also serves as Vice-President of the European Commission was awarded for what the President’s Office described as her extraordinary contribution towards strengthening and promoting EU’s common foreign and security policy, and extraordinary merit for boosting Slovakia’s position in international relations.

She paid a short visit to Slovakia at the invitation of Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák, the TASR newswire wrote. Apart from talks with Lajčák, Ashton also attended a meeting of Slovak ambassadors serving abroad and was received by Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška later in the day.

Catherine Ashton discussed with Lajčák the situation in Ukraine, western Balkans, the role and position of EU’s foreign policy, and other issues, the SITA newswire wrote.
