A proposal to complete a Russian-style broad-gauged railway and move its terminal to Bratislava instead of Kosice has not found support among Košice Region administration.
However, Transport Minister Ľubomír Vážny and the head of Russian Railways Vladimir Yanukin signed a memorandum on the extension of the broad-gauged railway to Bratislava during his visit to Moscow on May 4.
"This would mean that Kosice Region's last advantage against Bratislava would also go to the capital," Košice Region Governor Zdenko Trebula said on May 13.
Trebula said it would be better to increase the capacity of the border railway station in Čierna nad Tisou, where there are currently capacities to transfer and reload goods onto a western-gauge rail line. This option would also make more jobs for the Košice Region.
According to the Košice Region administration’s spokesperson Zuzana Bobríková, the region is working on the Global Logistic Industrial Park project and the construction of a broad-gauge rail terminal in Košice will add to the project.
