Slovak Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan said the European Union has not expressed strong enough support for Denmark in the global controversy over cartoons published by a Danish paper and caricaturing the prophet Mohammed.
Kukan intends to support his Czech colleague, Cyril Svoboda, in urging Europe to adopt a joint stance on the cartoons, the SME daily wrote.
According to Kukan, Europe should unite behind the view that a free press is key to democratic societies. He said that the violence that followed the publishing of the cartoons was inappropriate.
Jose Manuel Barroso, the head of the European Commission, said that Denmark was traditionally a tolerant country, and that freedom of expression was one of the basic values of Europe and should not be compromised.
