The spokesman for Poltár, Ondrej Lepiš, said members of the town council have already approved the plan. The chairman of the board of Emel Energy, Peter Badik, told TASR that the company needs to persuade energy companies to cooperate as a solar power plant needs an efficient switch-house.

Based on observations already made, Poltár has ideal conditions to use solar energy as it annually gets about 1100 kWh/m2 per year, of which approximately 800 kWh/m2 is between April and September, the Sme daily wrote on its website.

So far, Slovakia has barely used any of the potential of energy from the sun. The government’s strategy for a greater use of renewable sources has set a goal to produce 10 GWh of power by using the photo-voltaic installations by 2015. TASR, Sme
