THE GOVERNMENT Office will publish an official apology to Hedviga Malinová-Žáková, the ethnic Hungarian who reported that she had been assaulted in Nitra in 2006 apparently because she had spoken Hungarian in public. She was later pilloried by several government officials and accused of providing a false statement to the police, the TASR newswire reported.
The apology issued by the current government follows an agreement reached in September 2011 that Malinová-Žáková will drop a legal action against Slovakia that is currently before the European Court of Human Rights in return for publication of the government’s apology.
“I am happy that this is the way it [the government] expressed its disagreement with what the Office of the General Prosecutor has done in this case,” said Roman Kvasnica, the attorney representing Malinová-Žáková, as quoted by the SITA newswire.
Kvasnica was referring to the fact that the prosecutor’s office has not concluded its investigation into the charge against Malinová-Žáková of giving false testimony to the police that was initiated by former interior minister Róbert Kaliňák, SITA wrote.
