Following incidents involving rain-related mudslides in one of the city's local boroughs, Košice Mayor Richard Raši on Thursday, January 13, announced a state of emergency in the eastern Slovak metropolis, the country's second largest city.
Rock-falls along a two-kilometre section of hillside as a result of mudslides are continuing to threaten lives and property, especially of people living in 12 houses on a local street and drivers using another nearby road. Local authorities said, as quoted by the TASR newswire, that they would soon decide on a comprehensive strategy to tackle the situation. Geological intervention to stop the rock-falls has been proposed as a last resort, but weather conditions do not currently allow this.
