According to the minister, Kohútiková was the country's best and strongest hope for the post. “There are only two candidates for the post – Elena Kohútiková and Belgian central bank representative Peter Praet. The final decision is up to the European Council,” said Mikloš, as quoted by the TASR newswire, adding that the decision is likely to be made in March. The post has been vacant following the departure of Austria’s Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell.

Kohútiková, formerly vice-governor of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS), Slovakia’s central bank, is currently a board member of high-street bank VÚB. During her tenure at the NBS, she oversaw monetary policy management, free-market operations and risk management.
