The project of an underground railway line between the stations Bratislava-Predmestie and Filiálka will not be carried out in the current EU-funds programming period, Transport Minister Ján Počiatek decided. He made the decision based on the results of a feasibility study of the Bratislava Integrated Transport System, prepared by independent experts at the request of the European Commission and technical experts of the European Union.
As Počiatek informed at a press conference on Monday, October 8, the study does not recommend the project in the proposed form for economic and technical reasons, and for the same reasons, according to him, the second part of the project, involving an underground track from the Filiálka station to the district of Petržalka through a tunnel under the Danube River, will not be implemented. He said, as quoted by the SITA newswire, that the project will be removed from the pool of projects in the Transport Operational Programme for the years 2007 to 2013 and the more than €420 million that was originally allocated for this project will be used for other projects, which will involve purchases of new suburban and regional passenger trains in Bratislava and Košice regions, the reconstruction of the Old Bridge in Bratislava, and the construction of a tram line to Petržalka.
