LABOUR Minister Iveta Radičová presented a proposal to parliament that, if passed, would raise old-age pensions for around 80,000 people.
Based on the draft, pensions that were granted before the pension reform in 2003 would be re-calculated. According to the minister, the goal of the revision is to reduce the gap in value between pensions granted before 2003 and those awarded after. The earlier pensions were lower due to various regulations that were in force before 2003.
However, several MPs have objected to the submission of the revision such a short time before elections. It is thus unclear whether Radičová will gain the required support for her proposal.
Even the former ruling coalition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), which was in favour of the change while in government, is now cautious about the proposal.
"The election campaign has started already and everything suddenly has a different aspect," the KDH's Július Brocka said to the Pravda daily.
