Ministers one step closer to curing Status Law pains

Foreign Affairs Minister Eduard Kukan and his Hungarian counterpart László Kovács negotiated for several hours on July 19 only to tell media that they agreed to continue seeking agreement over the Hungarian Status Law.

The ministers did not touch on the most contentious issues of the law and only drafted principles that both parties have to keep when providing support for ethnic Hungarians in Slovakia or ethnic Slovaks in Hungary.

However, Slovakia has made a compromise by entering into talks on the application of the Hungarian Status Law as Slovak politicians had originally rejected discussing the legislation amended by the Hungarian Parliament in June.
