THE TRANSPORT Ministry has, for now, abandoned its plan to provide partial compensation for accommodation facilities to visitors from countries that require visas to enter Slovakia, the TASR newswire reported.
“As emerged from negotiations on next year's budget, strained public finances won't allow for allocating the sum required for these subsidies,” TASR quoted ministry spokesperson Martin Kóňa. “This means that in 2014 there'll be no subsidies towards the support of stays for tourists requiring visas.”
However, he said that the ministry is planning to go back to the idea when circumstances allow it.
In line with the original plan, accommodation facilities that attract visitors from countries that require visas to enter Slovakia for at least five nights would receive extra payments from the state as of 2014. Each stay of at least five nights was to be 'awarded' with €35 from the state. The overall cost incurred in this initiative was projected to reach €2.1 million in 2014. The ministry estimated that the measure would benefit some 60,000 travellers, according to TASR.
