ARNOLD the eagle, whose migration is being monitored by environmentalists and the Slovak public, was still in the south of Africa in the second half of February.
His whereabouts were recorded in south-eastern Botswana, which is the southern-most point of his migration so far, Tatra National Park (TANAP) administrator Pavol Majko told the TASR newswire. The lesser-spotted eagle (Aquila pomarina) was in the Limpopo river basin. “We expect the bird to slowly start migrating back to the nesting ground in Slovakia soon,” Majko said. “When we move to the north, we will inform on it,” he promised.
The bird’s migratory route can be followed by anyone via the internet thanks to a satellite transmitter attached to him by Slovak ornithologists, which shows his precise location every two hours. Arnold is the first lesser-spotted eagle that Slovak ornithologists have monitored in this way. The project was inspired by similar work done by colleagues in Poland.
