MORE than 40 percent of Slovaks want a referendum on the European Union's Constitution, according to a poll published October 26.

While 43 percent are in favour of the popular vote, 26 percent of respondents said they would like the decision to be taken by parliament, and 24 percent said they did not care, the TASR news agency wrote.

The public opinion research institute with the Slovak Statistical Office carried out the survey between October 1 and 8 on 1,111 respondents.

Compared to a similar poll in July this year, support for the referendum grew by 9 percent.

Respondents were also asked about their knowledge of the EU constitution.

Only 2 percent said they had a "detailed knowledge" of the document, 19 percent said they had a "general knowledge", and 77 percent admitted to knowing nothing about it.
