David Lyscom, the new British Ambassador to Slovakia, handed over his credentials to then-Slovak Premier and acting President Vladimír Mečiar. After the ceremony, the diplomat underscored that Great Britain is a good friend of Slovakia and unambiguously supports its integration efforts. Lyscom said one of his main tasks in Slovakia will be to judge the steps Slovakia takes on its path to this goal.

Lyscom also spoke on the reintroduction of visas by Great Britain for Slovaks, and subsequently by Slovakia for British visitors. He underlined that the British decision was not a political but a strictly practical move that has only a temporary character. "One of my tasks is to examine what steps Slovakia could take to prevent the situation [of an exodus of asylum seekers to the UK] from repeating," Lyscom said.
