Members of Parliament can submit candidates for the post of Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ) chairman until September 7, with the parliamentary vote set to take place September 18, Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška announced on Wednesday, August 1.
It is expected that former MP Kamil Krnáč from the opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party will run again, after he failed to garner enough votes - as the sole candidate - at a recent vote in parliament. He was not elected despite Prime Minister Robert Fico's promises that his Smer party, which enjoys a majority in parliament, would vote for him, the TASR newswire wrote. Fico, reacting to the opposition's reproofs towards Smer after the vote, said that the opposition didn't provide all its votes to Krnáč either.
"Last time we agreed on Kamil Krnáč, and we continue to insist on him as the candidate of the entire opposition," said Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) leader Igor Matovič.
