Good evening. Here is the Monday, September 2 edition of Today in Slovakia - the main news of the day in less than five minutes.
Slovakia in grip of high temperatures, no end in sight

Although autumn will soon begin on September 22, the weather does not seem to have noticed yet.
According to the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ), the hot weather will continue the next few days, probably the first ten days of the month. On Sunday, temperatures in some places rose to 35 °C, an extremely high temperature for September, notes the institute on social media.
The peak of the current heat wave is expected to occur on Tuesday and Wednesday. It is highly likely that September temperature records will be broken.
"The heat continues regardless of the date on the calendar, especially in the Pannonian Basin, where the colder air from Poland and the Czech Republic almost did not reach. All countries south of Slovakia recorded temperatures in the range of 34 °C to 36 °C, occasionally up to 37 °C", the SHMÚ stated.

Telling the stories of Ukrainian refugees

Just three days after Russia's invasion of Ukraine upended countless lives, Bratislava-based photographer Jana Rajcová resolved to channel her expertise in documentary photography into a project that would make an impact. She began her journey on March 2, 2022, when she first met Masha, a refugee sheltered by a friend. What started as an ad hoc effort to document the refugee experience soon evolved into a storytelling mission.
Opening on September 19, "Exodus.Report" will be the first solo US showing for the photographer. Rajcová's display is said to be the first uniquely Slovak photography exhibit on Russia's war in Ukraine in the US.
EVENT FOR THE WEEKEND
Remembering a legendary rock musician
This Saturday, a special festival in memory of legendary Slovak musician, composer, singer and director Dežo Ursíny is being held. He is considered one of the most important personalities of Slovak rock music
Starting from 13:00 in the park on Fedákova Street in Bratislava's Dúbravka borough where Ursíny lived, the festival will see his work performed by contemporary musicians. Admission is free. For more information, click here.

Slovak Ice-hockey Federation chair Miroslav Šatan announced that the country is applying to host the World Ice-hockey Championship in 2029. "I think that the IIHF has seen twice that we can organise such an event. Both were successful in terms of organisation and finances," Šatan said. (Sportnet)
Peter Hulenyi has become Slovakia's new Permanent Representative to the United Nations. During his 30-year career, he was an ambassador to Israel, and since 2019 he worked as the director of the UN department at the Foreign Affairs Ministry and later as head of the international organisations department. His most important task will be to prepare Slovakia for obtaining and carrying out the mandate of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, for which the country is applying. (TASR)
CGSI and Kasigarda, the Museum of Emigration from Slovakia to North America, partnered recently to add several original Slovak-American fraternal organisation charters from Minnesota to the museum's exhibit hall in Tahyňa, eastern Slovakia. These include an 1896 charter from the Slovak Catholic Sokol and charters from former lodges of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Union. Minnesota became home to Slovaks who emigrated in the late 19th and early 20th century to work in the flour mills, railroad, mining and steel fabrication industries of Minneapolis, Columbia Heights and small towns. They founded the Cyril and Methodius Society in 1888, one of the first three Slovak owned fraternal Insurance groups in the U.S.

President Peter Pellegrini, PM Robert Fico (Smer) and Deputy Speaker of Parliament Peter Žiga (Hlas) signed a joint declaration on a common approach to foreign policy issues, declaring that Slovakia is firmly anchored in the EU and NATO in the document. They declared the support and promotion of this anchorage, including the raising of issues that can improve relations within the EU and NATO. (TASR)
Michal Kovačič, the former presenter of the most watched political show Na Telo on the private TV Markíza, is founding a news website focused on video content, especially debates, reports from parliament, even investigation. Talking to the Denník N daily, he said that "it should replace what's disappearing from television". The website is set to launch on November 17. In addition to Kovačič, former TV presenters will also work on the project. The first one is Adel Ghannam who also worked for Markíza. The second is Barbora Šišoláková, who recently announced her departure from the state broadcaster STVR. According to the Sme daily, a total of 11 reporters have quit STVR so far. (Denník N, SME)
The Banská Bystrica Specialised Criminal Court stopped the prosecution of oligarch and PM Fico’s alleged close friend Miroslav Výboh due to the statute of limitations. The decision is final. He was charged in the Mýtnik (Toll Collector) case, which mostly concerns corruption in IT projects at the Financial Administration. (TASR)
Slovak ice-hockey players celebrate after their victory over Kazakhstan on Sunday, earning them a spot at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
