The number of passengers travelling by train grew for most of last year, but then fell after an increase in ticket prices in November, the SITA newswire reported.
The state-run passenger railway operator Železničná Spoločnosť Slovensko, a.s. (ZSSK) transported a total of 42.5 million passengers over the first eleven months of last year, up 2.53 percent year-on-year. In November, when fares went up, the company transported 3.78 million people, down 6.5 percent year-on-year, but sales revenue increased 8.9 percent. Compared with October, the last month before fares went up, the number of passengers was down 700,000 in November.
ZSSK says it will evaluate the impact of the increased fares on passenger numbers at a later date. The company's director-general Pavel Kravec told SITA that it could not avoid increasing ticket prices any longer. The company originally planned to transport a total of 43.9 million people last year.
