Unemployment fell year-on-year in 2Q14, the third such drop in a row, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) announced September 3. Going down by 6.2 percent y-o-y, the number of unemployed people in the second quarter of this year stood at 356,400. At the same time, the unemployment rate decreased by 0.8 p.p. y-o-y to 13.2 percent.
When seasonal effects were taken into account, unemployment in 2Q14 went down by 2.4 percent, or by 9,000 individuals, quarter-on-quarter, with 364,900 jobless people recorded. The number of people without a job for a period longer than one year declined by 12,900 y-o-y to 241,900. Their share of the overall unemployment rate went up by 0.8 p.p. y-o-y to 67.9 percent, however. Meanwhile, the number of short-term unemployed people fell by 10,600 to 114,600, the TASR newswire quoted the ŠÚ.
As for the age structure of the jobless, the biggest group of unemployed people was made up of those aged between 25 and 34 – 113,800 individuals; who made up 31.9 percent of all unemployed.
The highest number of unemployed persons was recorded in Prešov Region and Banská Bystrica Region. The unemployment rate dropped in most regions, relatively most in Bratislava Region and in Košice Region, ŠÚ wrote. It increased in Žilina Region and in Trnava Region. Banská Bystrica Region had the highest regional unemployment rate – 18.8 percent.
Meanwhile, in the first half of the year, the number of jobless people fell by 4.7 percent y-o-y to 369,700. The unemployment rate for the same period shrank by 0.3 p.p. y-o-y to 13.7 percent.
