Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák has said that continuing problems with the Roma community must be solved from the place where they live in biggest numbers, the Spiš region in eastern Slovakia and has announced plans to move the Office of the Government Proxy for the Roma Community be moved.
However, the current proxy Peter Pollák is against moving outside Bratislava, but promised to send part of the office’s staff east, the Sme daily wrote in its October 10 issue. It is important that a portion of employees stay in the capital, as they have o communicate with ministries and authorities, Pollák said. A year ago also Prime Minister Robert Fico demanded the office move east.
Former government proxy, Miroslav Pollák, criticises the proposal as a political gift to Spišská Nová Ves Deputy Mayor Lea Grečková. He adds, as quoted by Sme, that the proposal is not backed by any expert opinions and is only meant to boost Grečková’s influence in the region. A proxy can have even super-powers but he does not have a chance to succeed given the negative attitude of the government, concluded Miroslav Pollák, who was against the such a move when still in office.
