The scam, in which tax rebates were fraudulently obtained, has cost Slovakia an estimated Sk1 billion (€25.5 million).

Interior Minister Vladimír Palko said that the crime ring, of which 81 people have already been arrested, had seven different levels of management, and that Jozef O. was at the top level, the SME daily wrote.

According to Palko the gang operated in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary, and it is believed to have also been run by crime syndicates in countries of the former Soviet Union.
