OPPOSITION MPs are demanding that the cabinet halt April's planned increase in the wages of MPs, ministers, and other state officials.

MPs' monthly wages are planned to increase by Sk6,290 (€155) and those of the cabinet ministers by Sk9,396 (€230). The president, whose wage depends on the MPs' wages, would get Sk25,000 (€615) more than he had been earing before, the daily Pravda wrote.

After the wage hike, MPs would earn Sk43,390 (€1,070) plus a flat monthly compensation of Sk34,710 (€855), while the president would receive Sk173,000 (€4,260) plus Sk40,000 (€985) in flat compensation.

Analysts have warned that at a time in which the state is making severe cuts to social benefits amid rising prices, the public might view the increase as an immoral step.

"It is insensitive towards the people, and almost immoral. The constitutional representatives should adjust to the situation," said analyst Jan Baránek.
