The parliament passed the proposed amendments to the Labour Code to their second reading on May 17 after a two-day debate, in which 22 lawmakers took the floor.
A proposal from opposition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union MP Iveta Radičová, the former labour minister, to return the draft measure to the government was rejected.
The amendments to the Labour Code aim to protect employees from unfair dismissal and bring labour statutes in line with EU standards while reflecting innovations arising from new directives and European legal requirements.
In the run-up to the second reading, which will take place during the parliamentary session in June, the amendments will be discussed by parliamentary committees, where MPs will be able to submit objections. The Slovak National Party and the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, members of the ruling coalition, say they are not satisfied with some points, and will attempt to push through their objections and reservations via amending proposals.
