Prime Minister Robert Fico issued a statement on October 6 distancing himself from statements made by Ján Slota, the leader of the Slovak National Party (SNS), who likened Hungarian Foreign Affairs Minister Kinga Göncz to Adolf Hitler.
Fico also appealed to media to pay attention to the merit of the issue, which is the ultimatum issued by the Hungarian Foreign Affairs Minister to Slovakia.
"This ultimatum is very simple: if the government does not act according to the wishes of the Hungarian government, Hungary will start a kind of diplomatic war against the Slovak government," Fico said.
The second significant problem, according to the PM, is the global financial crisis.
"We should focus on these two problems rather than searching any formal pretexts to obscure things that really concern Slovakia," he added.
In a speech on October 5 while unveiling a Slovak national symbol in Pavlovce, in eastern Slovakia, Slota said, "I can compare her to [Konrad] Henlein's people and that mustached man from the pub in Munich, who said the same kind of things as that lady I have already mentioned several times today. Maybe she is already growing that mustache.” SITA
