THE POLICE have arrested a 49-year old military officer who is suspected of sending falsified letters in the name of President Rudolf Schuster to Slovak companies asking for financial contributions, the news wire SITA wrote.
According to presidential spokesman Ján Füle, the accused man had previously been sentenced for corruption and abusing the powers of public office but President Schuster later granted him amnesty.
It was probably the president's signature on the amnesty document that was used to sign the fake letters.
In the past few days, someone sent letters to rolling stock maker Tatravagónka Poprad and brewery Tatran Poprad, offering them, in Schuster's name, the chance to join presidential foreign trips in exchange for financial contributions to certain bank accounts.
Tatravagonka sent Sk60,000 to these accounts. However, Tatran representatives were suspicious of the letters. They contacted the presidential office and discovered the fraud.
