NEARLY 38 percent of Slovak voters would sell their votes if asked ahead of the June 17 general elections, according to an MVK agency poll conducted for the SME daily.
MVK sociologist Pavel Haulík believes this result suggests that voter turnout in the elections will be low.
In the poll, 46 percent of respondents said they would not sell their votes for any amount of money. The most numerous members of this group were the voters of the conservative Christian Democratic Movement and the Hungarian Coalition Party. This group also tended to include older people, pensioners, university educated people, and wealthier respondents.
Among those who admitted that they would sell their votes, most described themselves as voters of the Slovak Communist Party, Smer, and the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia. Students, unemployed people, women on maternity leave and the inhabitants of eastern Slovakia were the most willing to sell their votes.
