Although Europeans perceive democracy as an obvious necessity, the EU is currently facing a number of challenges, including climate change, youth unemployment and migration.
At the same time, all these challenges attract populist political parties, which are trying to break the EU apart and obtain power, the Post Bellum organisation, which collects and archives the memories of people who survived undemocratic regimes of the 20th century, wrote in its call to people.
“Hence, it is not enough to hope for a better future,” Post Bellum wrote. “This time, each of us must take ownership for our responsibility for it.”
Democrats for democracy
It is crucial for all the democrats to defend democracy by talking to people and explaining to them why their vote in the European Parliament elections is important and why it is beneficial for Slovakia to be part of this European community.
“We forget that the main reason for our membership in the EU is so that Slovakia is part of a global community of states, which ensures a life of peace for all its inhabitants,” Post Bellum claimed.
Besides, Slovakia can only face global challenges and secure a better life for its citizens when part of the EU.
The Post Bellum call, signed by about 30 public personalities, was supported by former PM Iveta Radičová, dissident František Mikloško, actors Emília Vášaryová and Richard Stanke, and others.
